PEI Power Corporation is currently undergoing a multi-phase expansion project
that will make it one of the largest individual renewable energy facilities in
the United States.
Phase I of the expansion includes the construction of an 18 mile pipeline to
connect the company’s Archbald generating facility to the Alliance Sanitary
Landfill, owned by Waste Management, in Taylor, PA. The pipeline project will
make approximately 460,000 cubic feet per hour of landfill gas available to PEI
for electric generation. Construction of the pipeline began in January 2009 and
is expected to be in service by year end.
Phase II of the project includes the installation of two Solar Mercury 50 gas
turbines on site in Archbald. Each Solar turbine is capable of generating 4.6
MW. Once additional LFG is available from the Alliance Sanitary Landfill, PEI
will be able to fully utilize its existing 25 MW steam turbine in addition to
the new Solar gas turbines. Site preparation for the turbines began in April
2009 and installation is expected to be complete by the end of 2009.
Once the expansions are complete, PEI expects to be able to generate enough
electricity from landfill gas to power over 30,000 homes.
