In late 2009, PEI Power Corporation completed a multi-phase expansion project
that made it one of the largest individual renewable energy facilities in the
United States.
Phase I of the expansion included the construction of an 18 mile pipeline
that connected the company’s Archbald generating facility to the Alliance
Sanitary Landfill, owned by Waste Management, in Taylor, PA. Construction of the
pipeline began in January 2009 and was completed by year end.
Phase II of the project included the installation of two Solar Mercury 50 gas
turbines and related auxiliary equipment on site in Archbald. Each Solar turbine
has a nameplate capacity of 4.6 MW. Site preparation for the turbines began in
April 2009 and was complete by late fall.
PEI expects to be able to generate enough electricity from landfill gas to
power approximately 30,000 homes, making it one of the largest individual
renewable energy facilities in the country.
